It also helps conceal rooftop plant and building services, reduce direct exposure to the weather and contribute to the overall appearance of the façade.
Getting that balance right is rarely straightforward. Every building has different ventilation requirements, equipment and architectural priorities.

Getting the Airflow Right
One of the biggest misconceptions is that the size of the structural opening determines how much air can pass through it. In reality, blades, frames, mullions and mesh all reduce the available free area, so the finished louvre performs differently from the opening itself.
Before fabrication begins, it’s important to understand exactly what the plant room requires. The mechanical engineer should confirm the required airflow, whether the louvre will serve as an intake or exhaust, and the maximum acceptable pressure drop.
Free area is an important part of the specification, but it should always be considered alongside the overall performance requirements of the louvre. A system designed to provide greater visual screening or improved weather resistance may reduce airflow compared with a more open blade arrangement. Mesh, acoustic treatments and security backing can also influence performance.
Reviewing the opening alongside the mechanical requirements allows us to recommend a louvre arrangement that works for the application rather than simply matching the opening dimensions.
Screening Plant Without Restricting Performance
Most plant rooms contain equipment that needs to remain well ventilated but isn’t something the architect wants on display.
Louvres provide an effective way of concealing air handling units, chillers, generators, ductwork, pipework and electrical services while still allowing the required airflow.
How much of that equipment remains visible depends on several factors, including blade angle, blade depth, spacing and the position of the plant behind the screen.
The expected viewing position should also be considered. A screen that completely hides equipment from street level may offer a different view from neighbouring buildings or upper floors. Lighting can have a similar effect, making equipment far more noticeable after dark than during the day.
By reviewing the architectural elevations and sections, we can help coordinate the blade arrangement with the most important sightlines while keeping the louvres aligned with curtain walling, cladding and other façade elements.
Weather Protection Needs More Than the Louvre Alone
Buildings in Ireland are exposed to challenging weather throughout the year, making weather protection an important part of the overall louvre design.
While the right louvre can significantly reduce the direct entry of rain and wind, it should never be expected to perform as a waterproof wall. The blade profile, louvre depth, air velocity and the orientation of the building all influence how the system performs.
What sits behind the louvre also needs to be considered. Some equipment can tolerate occasional moisture, while electrical systems, switchgear and sensitive control equipment often require a higher level of protection.
The surrounding construction is just as important. Flashings, cills, drainage routes and perimeter sealing all need to work together to direct any water safely back outside the building.
Where projects have specific weather performance requirements, we can advise on suitable Renson louvre profiles using independently tested performance data, including EN 13030:2001 classifications for airflow and water resistance.
Mesh, Noise and Security
Not every plant room has the same requirements.
Some projects need insect or bird mesh, while others require additional security or acoustic performance.
The type of mesh should reflect the application. Very fine mesh can help prevent insects entering the building but may also restrict airflow and require more regular maintenance as dirt builds up over time.
Noise control may also be an important consideration, particularly around generators, chillers, fans and data centre cooling equipment. Acoustic louvre solutions can help reduce sound transmission, but they also affect airflow, so both requirements should be considered together during the design stage.
Ground-level openings and critical infrastructure may also require additional security measures such as stronger mesh, backing screens or more secure fixing methods.

Good Coordination Saves Problems Later
Many installation issues arise not from the louvre itself, but from the surrounding details.
The architectural, structural, mechanical and façade drawings all need to agree on the opening size, frame position, support arrangement and surrounding construction.
Contractors also need clear information about flashings, fixing locations, drainage, movement allowances and sealing details before fabrication begins.
Reviewing these elements early helps avoid unnecessary alterations on site and gives contractors, procurement teams and installers a clearer understanding of how the system will be installed.
