Renson Louvres: What Contractors Need to Know Before Ordering
July 27, 2026An external building screen often starts with a practical requirement. Plant equipment needs to be concealed, a service area needs screening or rooftop services need to be hidden from view.
Once installed, however, it becomes far more than a functional enclosure. The spacing of the blades, the proportions of the panels and the shadows they create all contribute to the finished façade. A well-designed louvre screen should feel like it belongs to the building rather than something added afterwards.

The Screen Should Feel Like Part of the Façade
Large louvre screens often cover a significant area of commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, apartment developments and data centres. Rather than looking like a separate enclosure fixed onto the outside, they should read as an integrated part of the façade.
That usually means aligning the screen with the building’s geometry. The top of the screen may follow the parapet, horizontal blades can align with curtain wall transoms or cladding bands, while vertical joints relate to structural bays or window modules.
These relationships help the screen feel intentional. The equipment disappears behind the blades, while the louvre system itself contributes to the overall design of the building.
Framed Panels or Continuous Blades?
External louvre screens are generally designed in one of two ways.
Framed panels are manufactured as individual units, each containing its own blade arrangement. They suit structural openings and projects where the screen needs to be divided into manageable sections for transport and installation. Because the panel joints remain visible, their position should support the rhythm of the façade.
Continuous blade systems create a different visual effect. Horizontal blades span across several support locations, producing longer uninterrupted lines that give larger elevations a cleaner, more consistent appearance.
Renson Linius systems allow ventilated and closed sections to sit within the same continuous blade pattern. This makes it possible to extend the louvre design across plant openings, solid walls and other façade conditions without changing the overall appearance.
The right approach depends on the scale of the screen, the supporting structure, the installation strategy and the architectural intent.
Design for How People Actually See the Building
Architectural drawings usually present a building head-on. In reality, very few people experience it from that viewpoint alone.
A rooftop screen may be viewed from the street, neighbouring buildings or higher floors nearby. Ground-level screens are often seen from much closer distances, where blade spacing and profile depth become far more noticeable.
Blade angle, profile depth and the distance between the louvre screen and the equipment behind it all influence what remains visible.
Lighting also changes the appearance. During the day, the space behind the blades often appears darker, helping conceal the equipment. At night, internal lighting can reveal structural supports and plant that were barely visible earlier.
Considering these viewing positions during the design stage helps produce a screening solution that performs as intended once the building is occupied, rather than simply looking right on the elevation drawing.
Blade Rhythm Creates the Character of the Screen
The visual impact of a louvre screen comes from repetition.
Closely spaced blades create a stronger sense of enclosure, while wider spacing produces a lighter, more open appearance. Blade depth also changes the character of the façade by creating different shadow lines throughout the day.
Vertical joints deserve just as much attention. Too many joints can interrupt the flow of the screen, while oversized panels may introduce practical challenges during fabrication, transport or installation.
The most successful designs balance appearance with the practical demands of manufacture and installation.

One Appearance, Different Functions
The conditions behind a louvre screen often vary across the same elevation.
One section may require unrestricted ventilation, another may sit in front of a solid wall, while a third may need additional screening behind the blades.
From the outside, however, the blade pattern can remain consistent.
Renson Linius systems are particularly effective where a continuous appearance is required across areas with different functions. The same horizontal blade arrangement can extend across ventilated openings, closed sections and access points, even though the construction behind them changes.
This approach works particularly well on data centres, rooftop plant enclosures and long service elevations.
Where ventilation performance is required, the selected Renson louvre profile must also satisfy the mechanical design. Airflow, pressure drop, weather resistance, acoustic performance and mesh options should all be considered alongside the visual requirements when selecting the most suitable system.
The Edges Matter Just as Much
The central sections of a louvre screen are often the simplest to resolve. It’s the edges that usually determine how refined the finished installation looks.
Corners need to conceal the supporting structure while maintaining the blade pattern around changes in direction. At roof level, the relationship between the screen, parapets and cappings has a significant influence on the finished roofline.
The base deserves the same attention, particularly where the installation meets roof upstands, concrete kerbs, drainage details or adjacent cladding systems.

Integrating Access Without Disrupting the Design
Most external louvre screens require some form of access, whether that’s a personnel door, maintenance gate or removable section.
When these elements are considered early in the design process, they can be incorporated into the blade layout so they blend into the overall screen rather than standing out as separate features.
The Renson Linius range includes integrated door systems and removable cassette sections that maintain the continuous horizontal blade pattern while providing practical access to the equipment behind the screen. Curved blade options are also available where the design calls for them.
Considering access requirements before the structural layout is finalised generally produces a neater result while preserving the consistency of the façade.
Colour Is More Than a RAL Number
Selecting a RAL colour is only one part of achieving the desired finish.
The sheen level, texture and the way natural light interacts with the blades all influence how the completed installation will appear.
A deeper blade profile may look almost solid from one viewpoint before becoming lighter as the angle of the light changes. Matt, satin, gloss and textured finishes each create a different visual effect, even when the same RAL colour is specified.
Our in-house powder coating facility offers a full range of RAL colours and finishes for Renson aluminium louvre systems and associated aluminium fabrications. Where the louvres need to complement curtain walling, cladding or other façade materials, reviewing physical colour samples under natural daylight helps achieve the best match.
Applying the same finish across blades, frames, trims and pressings creates a consistent appearance across the entire installation.
